The pages in every Notedfy notebook are blue, and that was a deliberate decision informed by research. Most notebooks are white by default, without anyone asking whether white is actually the best surface to think on. We asked. Here is what we found, and why we built the whole notebook around it.

Does the colour of your environment affect how you think?

There is a growing body of research suggesting it does. The colours around us have been linked to measurable differences in mood, focus, and the kind of thinking we do. Blue in particular has been associated with openness, calm, and a sense of space, the conditions in which the mind feels free to explore rather than narrow down. That association is the starting point for everything Notedfy is built on. We do not claim a colour can do the thinking for you. We do believe the environment you think in can shape the quality of the thinking, and the research points the same way.

What did the research find?

A study from the University of British Columbia, published in the journal Science, tested how different background colours affected performance across a range of cognitive tasks. It found that red tended to support detail focused tasks, while blue supported creative ones. On one measure of creative output, participants working against blue generated noticeably more ideas than those working against a neutral background.

A separate, independent study published in Frontiers in Psychology reached a consistent conclusion. Using a more rigorous baseline, it found that blue improved performance on creative tasks whether those tasks were simple or difficult. Two different research teams, in two different settings, observed effects pointing in the same direction.

We reference this research carefully. These studies describe associations observed in controlled settings, not guarantees, and we describe them that way. But the direction is clear enough, and consistent enough, that it changed how we thought a notebook should be made.

Why we built a notebook around it.

Once you accept that the surface you think on might shape the thinking itself, a white page stops looking neutral and starts looking like a missed opportunity. So we stopped using white. Every Notedfy notebook is built on deep blue pages, paired with a white ink pen chosen to write cleanly against them, because the page is not a detail to us. It is the environment your ideas are formed in.
